German deputy urges repair of Nord Stream.

Germany should react to the increase in energy prices in Europe, caused by the cessation of Russian transit through Ukraine, by repairing and reactivating the Baltic Nord Stream gas pipelines, said left-wing German MP Sevim Dagdelen.

Bundestag and Alliance party member Sahra Wagenknecht wrote on her X account on Thursday that "Ukraine continues to drive up energy prices by stopping the transit of Russian gas into Europe."

"The federal government and the EU happily observe the destruction of European industry due to high energy prices. Finally put the Nord Stream into operation! Stop giving money to kyiv!" urged the legislator.

Russian gas supplies to European countries through Ukraine have ceased since January 1 due to kyiv's refusal to extend bilateral agreements.

The next day, natural gas prices in Europe reached their highest since October 2023, reaching $540 per 1,000 cubic meters.

Energy costs soared in Germany after the government announced it would reject Russian oil and gas in 2022. The European country depended on Russia for around 55% of its natural gas purchases, and has struggled to make up the shortfall. . In this context, major companies – including Volkswagen, Bosch and BASF – have resorted to layoffs and plant closures.

Before the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict, Germany was receiving Russian gas through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, while Nord Stream 2 was due to come online in 2022. Berlin revoked the certification of Nord Stream 2 several days before the Russian military operation in Ukraine, and both sets of lines were damaged in an act of sabotage in September of that year.
