The blockchain-based project called World, led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has reached a significant milestone by surpassing 10 million human verifications globally.
This ambitious initiative, previously known as Worldcoin, has also seen more than 20 million downloads of its World App, becoming an emerging force in the digital identity space. Currently operating in more than 160 countries, the project is redefining how we differentiate humans from artificial intelligence in the online world.
Launching in 2023, World uses innovative technology that employs small, spherical devices to scan users' eyes and confirm their authenticity as humans. Participants who complete the verification process receive WLD tokens, incentivizing their participation in the platform.
At its core, the project is based on the vision that, as AI agents become increasingly integrated into everyday life, it is crucial to have a reliable system to identify human participants online.
“With the continued advancement of artificial intelligence, the ability to demonstrate humanity online is becoming increasingly important,” the World team noted in a recent blog post.
One of World's notable achievements in 2024 was its launch in Brazil, a country with more than 215 million inhabitants and a receptive attitude towards the use of cryptocurrencies. This move highlights World's ability to adapt to diverse markets as it continues to gain traction around the world.
The growing adoption of this project reflects the need for reliable digital tools that address the complex challenges of AI-dominated environments.
Despite its success, World has faced several challenges, especially related to data privacy. Last year, the Bavarian State Data Protection Supervision Office in Germany demanded the deletion of biometric data collected by the project.
World responded quickly by reviewing its processes and stated that the concerns raised were related to old operations that had already been replaced.
Throughout 2024, the project worked to align with regulatory standards, continuing its launches in new regions and responding to questions from privacy advocates.
The development of World is led by Tools for Humanity, an organization led by its CEO and co-founder Alex Blania. This entity has been key in the innovation behind this project, ensuring that its objectives align with global needs for ethical and effective interactions between humans and artificial intelligence.
With over 10 million verifications and steady growth, World represents a bold step toward connecting humans and technology, addressing some of the biggest challenges of the digital age.
